Some health insurance plans come with dental and vision coverage, often for an added fee. Others do not offer it at all, leaving the insured to seek out other options for coverage. Many decide not to add coverage to their existing plans or seek out additional coverage just to save money; others just don’t think dental and vision coverage is really necessary. In actuality, unless you have money to burn, this added coverage is necessary and could make a big difference later on.
Dental Insurance
It is one thing to go to a dentist because you want a nicer smile. However, most of us go for the health of our teeth and mouth. It is important to see a dentist once or twice per year for regular check ups and cleanings, to ensure the health of your mouth. Bad teeth can greatly impair your immune system, leading to worse problems, such as heart disease and stroke. It just isn’t worth the risk to not see a dentist! Dentist are the ones who can and will find mouth problems, such as cancers, early on. They can help to fix those terrible toothaches and do much for your health, if you follow their advice.
Dental work does not come cheap. Just the basics can get pricey! What if you need an extraction, root canal, dentures or some other procedure. You do not want to see the price list for these out-of-pocket expenses. There are options. You can go to a university dental clinic and pay less. There are also discount dental clinics, income-based dental clinics and discount card plans. However, you still wind up paying quite a bit. What about emergencies? They cost a ton of money! it is better to pay the added expense of dental coverage and have the assurance that it is there when you need it than to take any risks with the health of your mouth and your body.
Vision Insurance
People value their eyes. Unfortunately, it is often to the point of taking vision for granted. We forget that accidents happen, illness occurs, and vision can go downhill. Vision is an important part of everyday life for most people. The blind are admirable because they have learned to live without vision and thus, they have honed their other senses to make up for it. The rest of us are not so lucky as to have fine-tuned those other senses and we will want to do our best to keep our eyes in good shape and catch any problems early.
Vision should be looked at at least once every two years; more often for those with concerns such as diabetes and other illnesses that could affect the eyes. Vision insurance is important. For the poor, without coverage, there are programs that can help, but these often lead to not having a choice in optometrists and getting a poor selection in glasses (if needed) and only minimal examination. Vision insurance will cover it all, give you options, and all you will have to do is keep the appointment and pay a co-pay and possibly a small deductible.
If you value your health, you have to value your whole body. Don’t leave your eyes and teeth out in the cold. make sure they have some kind of coverage too.
